The Lion Dogs of Africa
An African legacy in Mccreedyblue: a study of the Rhodesian Ridgeback by Conor Mccreedy
There are certain creatures that embody the spirit of a continent. For internationally renowned South African artist Conor Mccreedy, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is one of them — a magnificent symbol of courage, loyalty, elegance and the untamed beauty of Africa.
Growing up beneath the vast African skies, surrounded by the extraordinary landscapes, wildlife and natural colours of Southern Africa, Mccreedy developed an enduring fascination with the relationship between man, animal and wilderness. Among the creatures that captured his imagination was the Rhodesian Ridgeback, a dog whose noble presence and remarkable history have become inseparable from the African landscape.
Historically known as the African Lion Dog, the Rhodesian Ridgeback traces its ancestry to the indigenous hunting dogs of the Khoikhoi people, later crossed with European breeds. Developed for extraordinary endurance, intelligence and bravery, these dogs became legendary for their ability to track lions through the African bush. Working in small groups, they would confront and hold a lion at bay through remarkable agility and instinct, allowing hunters to approach. They were not bred to kill the lion themselves, but to possess the courage to stand before one of nature's most formidable predators.
It is this extraordinary balance of strength and restraint, fearlessness and grace, that Mccreedy seeks to capture in his study.
Executed in his unmistakable Mccreedyblue, the painting transforms the traditional portrait of an African hunting dog into a deeply personal artistic expression. Two commanding portraits dominate the upper composition, their intelligent eyes revealing both sensitivity and quiet authority. Beneath them, two elegant full-bodied figures stand almost sculpturally, celebrating the Ridgeback's athletic anatomy, distinctive silhouette and dignified posture.
Working upon the natural, earthy surface of fine Belgian linen, Mccreedy allows the warmth of the unpainted canvas to become an essential part of the composition. Its organic tones recall the sandstone formations, sun-bleached grasses, dry earth and ancient landscapes of his African childhood. Against this restrained, natural foundation, his iconic blue pigment introduces an unexpected emotional depth — a dialogue between the earth from which these animals emerged and the extraordinary blue skies beneath which they evolved.
The relationship between the raw linen and the intensity of Mccreedyblue is deliberate. Where the linen speaks of nature, heritage and the passage of time, the blue represents memory, spirit and artistic transformation. Together, they create a work that feels both contemporary and timeless.
Throughout his artistic journey, Mccreedy's fascination with the natural world has remained a constant source of inspiration. Africa, with its extraordinary wildlife, rugged mountains and endless horizons, occupies a special place within his creative identity. His affection for the Rhodesian Ridgeback extends beyond the beauty of the breed itself; it reflects a deeper admiration for the resilience, companionship and instinctive intelligence of animals shaped by the African wilderness.
In this beautiful study, the dogs are neither portrayed as trophies nor simply as domestic companions. Instead, they emerge as noble guardians of an extraordinary heritage — living reminders of a time when survival demanded courage, loyalty and an intimate understanding of nature.
For Mccreedy, the Rhodesian Ridgeback represents something profoundly personal: the spirit of the Africa that shaped him, the wild landscapes that continue to inspire him, and the enduring relationship between humanity and the animal kingdom.
Through a single extraordinary colour, Conor Mccreedy preserves an African legend — not merely in pigment, but in memory, emotion and the timeless language of art.
